 Why Teach?

Once you start kindergarten the first question you get asked is "what do you want to be when you grow up?". Simple, a rockstar, a mermaid, a superhero and of course many more, but for me was to be a teacher. At that age I didn't know why or even know what the meaning of teaching was, but I knew I wanted to be looked up to. Elementary was my favorite growing up, even though I was a bit rambunctious and was always put on yellow and red for bad behavior, I still loved going to school. When I was in 2nd grade I had trouble reading which was a huge struggle for me, so I was put into Host, which was a program to help students like me who struggled to read. I HATED host. I felt that I was never understood or motivated because of how bad I was treated by the teachers. It made me feel embarrassed because of how bad I struggled and discouraged to feel that I was never going to get better. All I wanted and needed was patience and support. It wasn't until I met Ms. Rodriguez who was substituting for one of the teachers, she took the time to get to know me and had me read a few lines from a small book. Once she saw how I wasn't improving in my reading she went ahead and took the time to stay longer with me after school for 3 months. With just 3 months I was already reading from chapter books and even grew a love for reading. Ms. Rodriguez helped me throughout my elementary years until I got to middle school, at this point I grew an understanding of what teaching was really about. It made me really want to become a teacher who was as compassionate and understanding like Ms. Rodriguez.

I want to teach 2nd grade since it's a big grade for reading fluency, this grade is spent mastering fluency and reading comprehension. Which I feel this grade is more focussed on to prepare students for the STARR Test that they'll be taking in 3rd grade. I also love kids, they are always so invested in learning its truly fascinating how so much information can fit into there little minds. I believe that's what makes children so special.

school in May 2022. She is now a middle school Math Teacher.

  1. Hi Erianah,
First, I love that photo and the expression on your face. Love it. Your story about Ms. Rodriguez brought tears to my eyes. What an experience for you. Have you ever heard of Thank You Mr. Falker? I believe you could related to that book. Watch it read aloud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abN2aP_Dzd0
    Best wishes in this class.
